Make sure you edit /etc/fstab, tweak /etc/lilo.conf and run lilo before rebooting:
The default shell on this system is zsh, so to chroot to MCJ, add a bash at the end:
Before you start the VM add a line to your vmx configuration file so you can slow down the boot enough to get into the BIOS. This will allow you to change the boot order:

The VMware tools are installed via the CD-ROM drive. Configure them using /usr/bin/vmware-config-tools.pl after initial installation. This will also configure X, and this part is compatible with the MCJ root file system:
Note that the 2.0 MCJ root filesystem is all configured to run within both Fusion and VMWare 5.5. It should boot as-is if you use a Buslogic SCSI controller.
